Relinquished Presence is a photographic investigation into the limits of self representation and the gap between intention and effect. In a culture where identity is increasingly mediated through curated images and standardised visual codes, this body of work explores what happens when a person sits in front of a camera with nothing to perform and finds themselves still searching for a settled sense of self.
The project draws on Irving Penn's corner portraits, where sitters were positioned within a narrow angled space that constrained movement and stripped away the usual social cues of a portrait session. Relinquished Presence adapts this principle into what I am calling a pressure field: a minimal studio with constant lighting and no direction, designed to remove the props of performance and leave the sitter with only themselves. The result is a sustained encounter between the viewer and the sitter, free of the rehearsed performance of a camera face, allowing the sitter to drift into a state of being rather than performing.
This collection of portraits is presented as a typology of self knowledge in progress. Through the use of chiaroscuro lighting and a consistent, minimal visual language, the work attends to the minute details of the human face and the moments where the constructed self loosens, not to reveal a settled truth beneath, but to show a person mid-search. A small number of sitters within the series sit apart from this state, present and arrived. The contrast is deliberate, and asks the viewer to consider what searching for oneself and knowing oneself actually look like, side by side.
By embracing the unfinished and the unresolved, Relinquished Presence documents the physical and psychological realities that emerge when the work of self representation is suspended. The resulting portraits are a record of shared uncertainty, offering a quiet counterpoint to the filtered self in a visually saturated age.
